811 Know what's below. Call before you dig.

You probably already know that state law requires you to contact 811 before you dig, so that facility owners, who are members of the One Call Center, can be notified to mark their underground lines. But do you know exactly how many days in advance of digging you are required to do this? And do you know how long locate tickets are valid in your state, how large an area they can cover, and whether you must pre-mark your dig area to identify it before locators arrive?

State-mandated notification timeframes, ticket life and scope, and pre-marking requirements vary. Here is a quick summary for normal locate requests in the states Duke Energy serves.

Florida

  • Call 811 at least two full business days before you dig (excluding weekends and holidays), and at least ten full business days when the excavation site is under water.
  • The life of a locate ticket is thirty calendar days from the date of the initial request.
  • A locate ticket's coverage area cannot exceed 5280 linear feet on any single street; one ticket may cover up to five addresses.

  • Give detailed marking instructions and state whether pre-marking (white-lining) was done.

Indiana

  • Call 811 at least two full business days before you dig (excluding weekends and holidays).
  • The life of a locate ticket is twenty days from the date of the initial request.
  • A locate ticket's coverage area cannot exceed 2640 linear feet (unincorporated area) or 1500 linear feet (incorporated area).

  • You must pre-mark your dig area with white paint, flags or stakes if you cannot describe the excavation site in your dig ticket via a street address, legal description or highway location.

Kentucky

  • Call 811 at least two full business days before you dig (excluding weekends and holidays).
  • The life of a locate ticket is twenty-one calendar days from the date of the initial request.
  • A locate ticket's coverage area cannot exceed 2000 linear feet.

  • Pre-mark the location in white paint if requested.

North Carolina

  • Call 811 at least three full business days before you dig (excluding weekends and holidays), and at least ten full business days when the excavation site is under water.
  • The life of a locate ticket is fifteen full working days from the date of the initial request.
  • A locate ticket's coverage area cannot exceed 1320 linear feet or five adjoining addresses.
  • For online ticket entry click here.
  • You must pre-mark your dig area with white paint, flags or stakes if the excavation site cannot be clearly or adequately described in your dig ticket.

Ohio

  • Call 811 at least 48 hours before you dig (excluding weekends and holidays).
  • The life of a ticket is ongoing if marks are visible and work begins within ten days of original ticket.
  • A locate ticket’s coverage area is not defined. Excavators are encouraged to limit size and scope of tickets to manageable increments.

South Carolina

  • Call 811 at least three full business days before you dig (excluding weekends and holidays), and at least ten full business days when the excavation site is under water.
  • The life of a locate ticket is fifteen full working days from the date of the initial request.
  • A locate ticket's coverage area cannot exceed 1320 linear feet or five adjoining addresses.

Emergency Exceptions
Of course, if you must respond to an emergency such as a broken water main or other threat to life, health, property or essential public services, these requirements do not apply. In this case, please call 811 as soon as possible to request immediate emergency assistance.
