Protecting Buried Utilities in These Extraordinary Times
Utility services have never been more important. If you are planning to dig or move earth in any way, remember to notify 811 well in advance to prevent damage to underground utilities.

When planning your excavation, please keep in mind that everyone’s resources have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Consider postponing non-essential projects. If you must dig, help prevent locate delays by pre-marking your proposed dig area in white and notifying 811 of your planned excavation with as much lead time as is possible in your state.

Follow these Five Steps to a Safe Excavation to help protect critical underground utilities:

1.   

Plan your job and pre-mark your dig area with white paint, flags, and/or stakes.

2.   

Call 811 or enter an online locate request at call811.com before any excavation starts.

3.   

WAIT the required time for utilities to locate and mark their buried lines.

4.   

Respect the marks and maintain them while digging.

5.   

Dig with care and follow hand-excavating rules to verify the location of marked utility lines before power digging.

In some cases, utilities may be unable to mark their facilities within the usual timeframe. If you have not gotten locate markings or a response from a facility operator when the deadline passes, even if the law allows you to dig in your state, for the safety of your crew and the public, please be prudent. Contact 811 again and wait to dig until all utilities have been marked or you receive an all-clear.
