Stage 1: Abuse

Batteries are subject to three types of abuse:

• Thermal: overheating or failure to maintain thermal balance
• Electrical: overcharging, surges or arcing
• Mechanical: battery defect, compression or physical damage such as puncture

Abuse causes cell damage. Once a battery suffers an abuse, it will progress toward failure.
